Morgantown HS G Sharron Young has committed to Akron, he announced on social media Tuesday night. Young is the Zips’ first commit for the class of 2024.

Young chose Akron over Kent State, Murray State, Ohio, Radford, West Virginia and Western Kentucky. Young took visits to Akron, Ohio and West Virginia.

Young (6-foot, 150 pounds) is not ranked yet by the main recruiting databases, but held offers from Akron, Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Drexel, Kent State, Mount St. Mary’s, Murray State, Northeastern, Ohio, Penn, Radford, Rhode Island, Southeastern Louisiana, SC State, West Virginia, Western Kentucky, Winthrop and Youngstown State. Young led Morgantown HS to back-to-back WV Class 4A State Championships in 2022 and 2023.

Young reflected on his recruitment from West Virginia when Bob Huggins was still at the helm. Young’s WVU visit was back in February.

“I will always cherish having the opportunity to spend one on one time with coach Huggins. He’s a Hall of Fame coach for a reason and he gave some really great insight and things I can take away to make me a better player,” he said. “My family and I got to interact with all the coaches and staff and had some great hosts.”

Morgantown High School HC Dave Tallman went into detail about how Young has improved.

“Sharron continues to improve each day and works hard in the weight room to get bigger and stronger. He’s a great kid off the court but a ‘dawg’ on the floor. He really knows how to flip that switch. He’s extremely fast and is a great floor general. His toughness is always present. He plays with a chip on his shoulder,” Tallman said. “We’re excited to have him back for one more run.”
