Big 12
Joey McGuire Won’t Allow Texas Tech to Take WVU, Rich Rodriguez Lightly
WVU and Texas Tech will meet in Morgantown on Saturday afternoon to wrap up two very different regular seasons. For West Virginia, they have nothing to play for other than pride and a desire to cause chaos. But for the Red Raiders, a win sends them to the Big 12 Championship Game.
Knowing what’s at stake and the coach on the home sideline, Texas Tech Joey McGuire isn’t taking the Mountaineers lightly. McGuire’s respect and admiration for Rich Rodriguez is a big reason why he’s not ready to plan for Dallas just yet.
“I have a lot of respect for Coach Rodriguez, I don’t know him very well but I know a lot of guys that have worked with him and for him,” said McGuire during his weekly press conference. “He’s a great offensive mind.”
McGuire then elaborated about Rodriguez even more before getting what he views as his personal curse about gamers in West Virginia.
“Rich Rod is an offensive guru. You go back and look at his career, he’s kind of the king of tempo. They do a great job of getting the ball on the perimeter. They’re playing really, really hard. Whenever you got that, that means they still believe,” he said.
“I think a lot of that has to do with their freshman quarterback (Scotty Fox). When he first got in the game, the game was fast for him. The game has slowed down. They’re going to be jacked up, between Baylor and Tech, I don’t think I’ve ever been apart of a win there [Morgantown].”
McGuire also knows WVU has been playing much better as of late and the aforementioned freshman quarterback has been more comfortable each week as well.
“What’s really impressive is that once they settled on their quarterback, Fox, he has played really well. Beating Houston, at Houston, and Colorado. And a good game their last game. He’s played really well and will give them a spark, he’s a dual threat guy. It’s going to be a really interesting game.”
