WVU Women’s Basketball Takes Down McNeese State in The Bahamas
WVU Women’s Basketball pushed their winning streak to six on Monday, Nov. 24, taking down McNeese State 83-63 at the Baha Mar Hoop Pink Flamingo Championship in Nassau, The Bahamas.
The No. 21 Mountaineers (6-0) began the game on a 14-0 tear, forcing five turnovers and five missed shots in the first 5:20. Once their shots began to fall, the Cowgirls surged back into the game, cutting West Virginia’s lead down to three points late in the first quarter.
The Mountaineers managed to hold them there, beginning the second period on another hot streak that pushed their lead to 28-17. Senior guard Gia Cooke scored eight points in the quarter and 24 on the day, sinking 10 of 13 free throws as two Cowgirls’ starters fouled out and another finished with four.

Each of West Virginia’s starters scored in double digits, and senior forward Kierra Wheeler notched a 12 point, ten rebound double-double. In uncharacteristic fashion, West Virginia committed more turnovers than they forced, but they led 56-43 in shooting percentage and 23-4 in free throws made, which proved more than enough to secure the win.
Sydney Shaw scored eight-straight points for the Mountaineers late in the third quarter, putting them ahead 65-45 with three-point shots on consecutive possessions, then reserves like Sydney Woodley and Célia Rivière took on major minutes in the fourth quarter. While West Virginia went the final 4:43 without making a shot from the field, six made free throws helped them keep the lead at 20 as their strong defensive fundamentals remained.
Up next, WVU Women’s Basketball will take on Ohio State at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26 as they compete for the Pink Flamingo Championship crown.
