Oddsmakers have had trouble projecting WVU football games this season. And now right after beating the spread and earning a win over UCF on the road, West Virginia opens the new week as a heavy favorite for their next game.

Major sportsbooks currently have the Mountaineers favored by as much as 9.5 points. Circa Sports has a bit of a closer game, but still has WVU at -8.

If this seems like a lot in favor of West Virginia since WVU did lose back-to-back games before beating UCF, it’s important to note the spread the week of the UCF game opened with the Knights as a touchdown favorite over the Mountaineers and lost 41-28.

WVU and BYU both own 5-3 records, although West Virginia is 3-2 in Big 12 play while Brigham Young is 2-3. In terms of common opponents, both school shave wins over Texas Tech, but BYU lost to TCU, a team the Mountaineers beat in Fort Worth.

But as has been the case throughout the season, the betting odds don’t actually matter once the ball is kicked off. The Mountaineers will host the Cougars this Saturday under the lights at Milan Puskar Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 pm ET and the game will be televised on FS1.
