Tournament Projection Pits WVU Basketball Against Blue Blood

WVU Basketball team celebrating

One of the latest March Madness projections has WVU basketball as a 10 seed in the tournament and pits the Mountaineers against a Blue Blood in the first round.

Mike DeCourcy of Fox Sports has the Mountaineers as a No. 10 seed in the East Region taking on No. 7 seeded UCLA in the first round of the tournament.

WVU went 9-2 in non-conference play, already matching last season’s win total. Two ranked wins over Gonzaga and Arizona make up a strong early-season resume that has pushed the Mountaineers into tournament projections for the last few weeks.

However, a recent snag has been the team’s health. With Tucker DeVries missing the last three games and no announced timetable for return, some analysts have quietly slid the Mountaineers out of tournament talk for the time being.

WVU basketball is also into Big 12 play now, which will be much more challenging than the team’s non-conference slate. While DeCourcy projects WVU could face a Blue Blood in March, the Mountaineers will actually face a Blue Blood in just a few days.

West Virginia kicks off conference play with a trip to Allen Fieldhouse to take on the No. 7 Kansas Jayhawks on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

DeCourcy projects Kansas to be the No. 3 seed in the South, for what it’s worth.
