West Virginia has themselves a projected top 10 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft in JJ Wetherholt. Wetherholt has been injured for much of this season, but when he’s played, he’s performed.

That held true this past weekend against UCF when he hit two home runs, both tying the game up at the time. The first coming on Saturday to make the score 3-3 in the fifth inning.

Wetherholt’s second home run came on Sunday, a two-run homer to tie the game up at 5-5 in the second inning. West Virginia ended up winning both games as part of a three-game sweep of UCF to improve to 22-13 (11-4 Big 12) on the year.

JJ Wetherholt is heating up 🔥

With this jack, the 2024 Draft prospect has homered in back-to-back games.

These home runs were his first two of the season, as he’s only appeared in 11 games. Wetherholt’s injuries this year has hurt his draft stock slightly as he’s no longer the projected first overall pick, although he’s still being projected by most to go within the top 10.

The team has been boosted by his return from injury, having won six of their last seven games. Baseball America has them at No. 18 currently, buoyed by his return, and now they have a shot at returning to the NCAA Regional and a chance at the College World Series.

In 11 games this season, he’s slashing .325/.473/.550 with two home runs, eight RBIs and three stolen bases. During his breakout season a year ago, that turned him into a top MLB draft prospect, he slashed .449/.517/.787 with 16 home runs, 60 RBIs and 36 stolen bases. His .449 batting average last season led D1 baseball.
