West Virginia was tabbed as an underrated team heading into the 2023-24 season, according to college basketball analyst Andy Katz. Katz has the Mountaineers as the No. 5 most underrated group.

Katz’s top 10 underrated teams:

1. Clemson

2. Pitt

3. Nebraska

4. Iowa State

5. West Virginia

6. New Mexico

7. Grand Canyon

8. Yale

9. Boston College

10. St. Bonaventure

To say WVU was an underrated team on paper during the offseason would make sense but Katz is showing his boldness placing the Mountaineers in this list with everything going on. West Virginia, led by interim HC Josh Eilert, will have eight scholarship players available for the season opener on Monday. After recruiting a second wave of transfers during the summer, WVU has lost Jose Perez (parted ways), Akok Akok (health), RaeQuan Battle (waiver) and Kerr Kriisa (suspension) over the past month.

Battle’s waiver is currently in the appeal process as WV Governor Jim Justice and AG Patrick Morrisey each wrote a letter to the NCAA. Morrisey asks president Charlie Baker to come back with a response by Monday. Kriisa will serve his nine game suspension through mid-December.

West Virginia will open the season against Missouri State on Monday night at the WVU Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
