WVU AD Wren Baker Teases Return of Throwback Helmet
Despite being new to West Virginia, WVU director of athletics Wren Baker made a point of learning the history of the Mountaineers since arriving in 2022. And now two years into the job, Baker is teasing fans about the return of something from the past.
On Thursday, Baker, who is often active on social media, responded to a fan’s post about the possibility of throwback football helmets making a return. And Baker’s response lends one to believe he’s not against the idea, at least when it comes to one of those helmets being worn again on Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium.
I am a MASSIVE fan of that ‘65 helmet with the baby blue state sticker. 2025-1965 = 60 years

“If WVU ever wants to do a wacky football throwback, similar to what the Giants just revealed, I hope they do either 1965 or 1973-78 with a more metallic gold helmet,” said the fan.
Here’s Baker had to say: “I am a MASSIVE fan of that ‘65 helmet with the baby blue state sticker. 2025-1965 = 60 years.” He even tagged head coach Neal Brown and his deputy athletics director Matt Wells to bringing this to their attention that 2025 will mark 50 years from 1965.
And to top it all off, Brown replied to Barker with a simple eye emoji, making it clear he saw the interaction.
So while WVU recently unveiled a new era of football uniforms during the spring game and then revealed a unique tribute to the state’s connection to the coal industry, it’s also possible fans could see a big nod to the program’s past in the coming years as well.
