Honor Huff Wills WVU Basketball to Comeback Win Over Cincinnati

Senior guard Honor Huff scored 14 points in under two minutes in the second half, helping WVU basketball to a 59-54 comeback victory over Cincinnati on Thursday night.

The Mountaineers had another slow start to Thursday’s game, opening with an 14-2 deficit. The two points for WVU came from a paint jumper by senior guard Jasper Floyd.

Senior center Harlan Obioha ended a 5:23 WVU scoring drought with a pair of free throws, cutting the score to 14-4. Floyd added another jumper for an eight-point deficit shortly after.

The two teams continued to trade blows, as senior forward Brenen Lorient brought the score within seven, the smallest deficit of the first half, at the 2:31 mark with a free throw. Cincinnati extended the lead again, making the halftime score 30-20.

WVU failed to make a three-pointer in the first half, going 0-9 from beyond the arc. Lorient led WVU in first-half scoring with eight points.

The Mountaineers saw the Honor Huff takeover in the second half, starting at the 14:40 mark when he tallied WVU’s first made three. Cincinnati senior guard DayDay Thomas responded with another.

WVU continued to ride the hot hand with two more threes by Huff with two and-one layups, making the first free throw, but missing his second extra point opportunity. When it was all said and done, Huff had scored 14 straight points for the Mountaineers, making the score 40-39.

Senior guard Treysen Eaglestaff proceeded to give WVU its first lead of the game with a three-pointer at the 10:10 mark.

Cincinnati recaptured the lead after a four-point swing with a free throw, but Floyd made an impressive pass to the corner for a three-pointer by freshman forward DJ Thomas, making the score 49-47. Thomas added another with 1:30 remaining, giving WVU a four-point lead at 53-49.

Thomas added two free throws, extending WVU’s lead to five before junior guard Jizzle James hit a three with 41 seconds remaining.

The Mountaineers took care of the ball in the final seconds, finishing with a 59-54 win.

WVU basketball will take the court again when it hoss No. 15 Texas Tech at noon p.m. on Sunday.
