WVU Women’s Basketball earned a dominant ranked win over No. 14 Baylor on Sunday, Feb. 1, holding the Bears to just 47 shots taken in a 70-60 win at the Hope Coliseum.

The Mountaineers (18-5, 8-3 Big 12) forced 30 turnovers, creating 38 points off those plays and holding the Bears to just 14 baskets made; a 27-of-32 clip from the charity stripe kept Baylor in the game, but West Virginia managed to keep all hands on deck, despite the foul trouble.

They also dominated the glass 45-32, including 23 offensive rebounds that helped them make up for their 34 percent shooting. Kierra “Meme” Wheeler led the way with an 18 point, 15 rebound double-double; Jordan Harrison added 18 points herself.

West Virginia closed out the first quarter on a 9-0 run, putting them ahead 15-9 after making just one shot in the first six minutes. Baylor began landing their threes midway through the second, setting up their own 9-0 run to skip in front 25-23.

The Mountaineers took command with a 13-2 run in the third quarter, limiting Baylor to just one shot made over a span of close to seven minutes and establishing their first double-digit lead. Nine straight points midway through the fourth cut the lead to 53-48, but almost all of the Bears’ offense came from the charity stripe, where they made 15 of 17 shots in the final ten minutes. West Virginia managed to keep pace, matching Baylor’s 23 points scored and closing out their biggest win of the season.

The Mountaineers now hold third place in the Big 12, half a game behind Baylor with a head-to-head advantage. Up next, WVU Women’s Basketball will travel to face Colorado at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4.
