WVU Basketball Moves Up Seed, Faces DeVries’s Old Team in Latest Projection

WVU basketball moved up a seed line and drew an interesting first-round opponent in the latest Bracketology update by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi Friday morning.
Lunardi moved the Mountaineers (18-12, 9-10 Big 12) up to a nine seed following their win at Utah Tuesday night. He also moved West Virginia to the West Region, where he has them facing eighth-seeded Creighton in the first round.

First-year WVU head coach Darian DeVries is very familiar with the Blue Jays, having served as an assistant coach at Creighton forย 17 years from 2001-18 under head coaches Dana Altman and Greg McDermott.
WVU basketball has been firmly off the bubble for a couple of weeks and now looks to be locked into a tournament spot with one regular season game remaining. The Mountaineers host UCF in their regular-season final tomorrow at 2 p.m. inside the Coliseum.
The Mountaineers overcame an early double-digit deficit to win at Utah on Tuesday. The Utes led by a dozen, 19-7 early on before the Mountaineers made three-straight shots to cut Utahโs lead to 19-14. WVU led by one at halftime and went up six with less than a minute to play.
Javon Small powered West Virginia with 18 points and seven assists. Amani Hansberry and Joseph Yesufu finished with 12 points each, while Jonathan Powell had 10.
For a related story, WVU basketball barely moves in KenPom despite win.
