WVU Baseball didn’t just break out the brooms against Queens University of Charlotte on Monday, March 3. They brought a sledgehammer.

The Mountaineers (12-0) obliterated the Royals 17-3, activating the run rule after seven innings and continuing their unbeaten run to the season with another series sweep.

Gavin Kelly notched three hits, Chase Swain logged four, and of the 24 times a Mountaineer reached base, only seven of them were left stranded at inning’s end in an all around dominant display.

West Virginia (12-0) exploded for nine runs in the second inning, death through one thousand paper cuts as they sent 14 batters to the plate, logging seven singles, two doubles and two walks.

That gave starting pitcher David Hagen the win in just two innings pitched — unlike the pros, college baseball pitchers don’t need to complete five innings to become eligible for the statistic — striking out one batter across 23 pitches delivered.

Sam White and Gavin Kelly each tacked on a run the following inning with RBI singles, pushing the lead to double digits. After Queens got three runs back in the fourth, Jace Rinehart and Spencer Barnett continued the onslaught with two and three run homers, respectively.

Up next, WVU Baseball will host Kennesaw State for a three game slate beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 8.
