WVU Baseball Grinds Out 10th Straight Win

WVU baseball recovered from a disastrous first inning to pick up its 10th straight win to start the season, 11-7, over Queens in North Carolina.
Game two of the four-game series in North Carolina saw the Royals (2-8) jump out to a 4-1 lead over the Mountaineers (10-0) after the first inning. WVU broke the ice when Jace Rinehart singled home Brodie Kresser in the top of the first.
Queens responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. WVU starter Robby Porco only lasted a third of an inning, surrendering four runs on three hits and a walk. The Royals scored on a solo home run and a pair of run-scoring singles.
The Mountaineers weren’t down for long, however, as they responded with five runs in the top of the second to take control of the game. Kresser doubled home Armani Guzman and Rinehart drew a bases-loaded walk before back-to-back wild pitches allowed two more runs to come home. Two more runs in the top of the third put WVU up 8-4 as Guzman hit his first career home run and Rinehart drove in another run later in the inning.

Queens cut the lead top one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fourth. With WVU leading 8-7, both pitching staffs finally settled in and threw three-straight scoreless frames. West Virginia added a three-spot in the top of the eighth to build a four-run cushion.
Carson Estridge pitched the final 5.2 innings for the Mountaineers, allowing just three hits while striking out two. Chase Meyer, who relieved Porco in the first, got the win, allowing three runs in three innings with three strikeouts.
Rinehart finished with three hits and three RBI, while Kresser had three hits, one double, and drove in two. Guzman had two hits, including the solo homerun, while Logan Sauve and Sam White each scored twice.
WVU and Queens continue the series with game three Sunday at 2 p.m. WVU took game one, 7-1, on Friday.
