WVU men's soccer celebrates goal

Reaching a career milestone means Dan Stratford’s WVU men’s soccer team will play for a conference title. Stratford claimed career win number 100 and the Mountaineers advanced to the Sun Belt Championship.

West Virginia blanked South Carolina 2-0 on Wednesday night to keep their hopes of a conference title alive. The win improves WVU’s overall record to 14-1-4, reaching the 14-win plateau for just the fourth time in program history. One more victory would mean setting a new program record.

Just like in the quarterfinals, seniors Luke McCormick and Yutaro Tsukada scored for the Mountaineers. McCormick’s goal ended up being the game winner while Tsukada found the back of the net via a penalty kick for his ninth goal of the season.

If that next win happens in the Sun Belt title game, it would mean the Mountaineers rallied to a championship as a three seed and would also mean West Virginia would have two wins over in-state rival Marshall in one year.

The top seeded Thundering Herd will be waiting as the opponent for WVU on Sunday. But unlike when West Virginia picked ups. convincing 5-2 win over Marshall during the regulars season, this match will be a road game for the Mountaineers.

Marshall will host WVU at 1 pm ET on Sunday at Hoops Family Field in Huntington, West Virginia.
