WVU OC Chad Scott Excited About Idea of Dual Threat QB Leading Mountaineers

It certainly won’t be the only difference in the West Virginia offense in 2023, but the Mountaineers will have a dual threat quarterback once again.

While speaking with the media on Tuesday after WVU’s first Spring practice, offensive coordinator Chad Scott immediately pointed out that the offense is assured to have a quarterback with mobility. And despite a quarterback competition going on between Garrett Greene and Nicco Marchiol, Scott can say this because both players possess an ability to run and scramble outside of the pocket. This is a trait that no starter during the Neal Brown era has been able to offer the offense.

Being able to utilize a mobile quarterback also makes the promotion of Scott to offensive coordinator a perfect fit. Scott has spent his time at WVU working on the ground game, but that did not include relying on any production from the quarterback up until now.

A rough 2022 season with transfer quarterback JT Daniels triggered Brown to make the decision to go with one of his homegrown quarterbacks already on the roster in 2023. He doesn’t plan on naming the starter until much closer to the Fall, but did say “it’s a testament to those guys” when asked if seeing both Greene and Marchiol in increased game action helped make him feel his team did not need to pursue another transfer quarterback.

West Virginia are now going to get what they have been wanting for years – a dual threat quarterback leading the Mountaineers, much the same way Major Harris, Rasheed Marshall and Pat White did throughout some of the most successful seasons in program history. Many of WVU legends of the past even voiced their enjoyment in watching a dual threat quarterback after Greene exploded on the scene in the win over Oklahoma.
