Ever since entering the transfer portal on April 13, West Virginia has been very interested in Akok. WVU head coach Bob Huggins visited the 6-foot-9 forward last Monday in Connecticut before Akok went to visit Georgetown. Huggins pitched West Virginia to Akok in hopes to get him to visit Morgantown. Huggins did just that.
Akok visited Georgetown last week and is set to visit Pitt after his West Virginia trip.
Akok spent three seasons at UConn under head coach Dan Hurley. The New Hampshire native suffered an Achilles injury in the 2020-21 season, but since has recovered. This past season, Akok got back on the floor and averaged 3.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in just 13.9 minutes of play. When the Huskies played WVU back in December, Akok started the game at center and finished with two points and 10 rebounds. Akok has two years of eligibility remaining.
West Virginia currently has one open scholarship left for next season. The coaching staff has added JuCo big men Jimmy Bell Jr. and Mohamed Wague to the team, while returning James Okonkwo. WVU could use another big to load up the depth at that position. Akok can rebound and shot 48 percent from the field. The lack of rebounding and missed shots from last season can be helped with the acquisition of Akok.
