According to Baseball America’s latest tournament projections, the Mountaineers currently sit as a No. 2 seed in the Chapel Hill regional.

Also listed in the regional is North Carolina (1), Illinois State (3) and Campbell (4).

West Virginia does still have an outside shot of hosting their own regional in Morgantown, but will certainly need some help along the way. Big 12 foes Oklahoma State and Texas Tech are currently slated to host regionals, so if either of them fall apart in the Big 12 tournament that will certainly help. Of course the Mountaineers have to take care of their own business and complete a three game sweep of George Washington this weekend. A loss to GW will take a hit to the teams RPI and their chances of hosting.

Seeding implications for the Big 12 tournament are still at stake although West Virginia has completed their conference slate. Oklahoma State currently sits in 3rd place as the Mountaineers reside in 4th. West Virginia would need Baylor to win the series this weekend vs Oklahoma State for the Mountaineers to jump the Cowboys in the conference standings. Doing so, would also give WVU a better shot at hosting. The Cowboys pounded Baylor in game one, so the Bears will need to win the last two games of the three game set.

The Mountaineers are back in action tonight for game two against George Washington at Mon. Co. Ballpark with first pitched scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
