Fifth-year senior guard Jose Perez will be re-entering the transfer portal, leaving West Virginia’s basketball program after eight months, a source tells WV Sports Now. Joe Tipton of On3 Sports was the first to report.

**Update (12:44 p.m.) – Perez tells WVSN that he is open to returning to West Virginia.

West Virginia recently promoted assistant Josh Eilert to interim head coach. Before and after Eilert was promoted, the team lost Tre Mitchell, Joe Toussaint, Mohamed Wague and James Okonkwo to the transfer portal.

Perez (6-foot-5) transferred to West Virginia in late October after Manhattan head coach Steve Masiello was let go two weeks before the season starting. Perez committed to WVU within days of entering the portal in hopes to play this past season. The Bronx, NY native sat out the entirety of the 2022-23 season after being denied a waiver by the NCAA.

Perez last played in the 2021-22 season with Manhattan, averaging 18.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Perez shot 40 percent from the field. Perez was named the Preseason MAAC Player of the Year.

Before Manhattan, Perez previously played at Gardner Webb and Marquette. Perez has one year of eligibility remaining.
