DL Cam Mallory Lives in the Backfield | WVU Football All 105

An Alabama state champion with a nose for the quarterback, freshman defensive lineman Cam Mallory is a three-star recruit with plenty for Mountaineers fans to get excited about. He’s shorter than the average lineman at six-feet tall, but his 298-pound frame gives him plenty of heft to out-muscle opposing offensive linemen.

Mallory amassed 12 sacks and 26 tackles for loss as a senior, setting up shop in his opponents’ backfield and forcing them to play from behind the sticks. He joins a packed but unproven defensive line room: of the other 15 players listed at his position, six have four years of eligibility remaining and five are transfers from Division II or community colleges.

That still leaves WVU with almost half a dozen experienced contributors, but Mallory’s playing time could skyrocket as soon as next season.

Post-Camp Outlook: Mallory’s ability to get to the quarterback and impede the running game bodes well for his future playing time. The Mountaineers’ defensive line room displays a stark division between young, inexperienced players and plug-and-play veterans without much eligibility remaining.

Projected Role: Expect Mallory to compete with the rest of WVU’s youth movement for reserve snaps in 2026, whether on the defensive line or on special teams. A strong work ethic in practice could have him penciled in to start as soon as next season if head coach Rich Rodriguez likes the way the group progresses and doesn’t feel the need to raid the transfer portal.

Accolades, Highlights: Mallory earned a three-star rating as a recruit along with a bevy of all-state honors in his native Alabama. He also won a state championship.
