West Virginia native Preston Fox is back with WVU football, head coach Rich Rodriguez announced Monday.

Fox, a Morgantown High graduate, announced his retirement from football earlier this year in January, but has changed course and rejoined the Mountaineers.

Rodriguez said Fox called him sometime this winter and asked to rejoin the Mountaineers. Rodriguez confirmed Fox has been re-added to the team’s roster and is participating in Spring practices.

โ€œI wanted to come on here and thank everyone for all the support throughout my career! I have decided to stop playing football for many reasons, but personally itโ€™s time for me to move on,โ€ Fox wrote on social media to announce his retirement.

โ€œWest Virginia has made my dreams of earning a scholarship come true, but not only earn a scholarship but compete at the highest collegiate level. Everything comes to an end at some point, but my life is just starting. Thank You West Virginia! Once a Mountaineer, Always a Mountaineer.โ€

Fox walked on at WVU in 2020 and eventually earned a scholarship from then-head coach Neal Brown. Across four seasons, Fox amassed 43 receptions for 548 yards and three touchdowns. He has one year of eligibility remaining from the 2020 COVID season.

This is GREAT news! They don’t come any tougher than Preston Fox – he’s a perfect fit for the Rich Rod culture.
