Morgantown, W.Va.- WVU baseball hosted Towson at Kendrick Family Ballpark this afternoon, coasting to a 16-5 win. The offense worked counts, found the gaps when needed and showcased situational baseball with hitting behind the runners, helping the offense to get ahead and stay ahead.

The apparent game plan for the WVU pitching staff was a bullpen day, as 10 Mountaineer pitchers made an appearance in the game.

The Mountaineers started the afternoon off hot, putting a four spot up in the first inning. The first four batters reached base and ended up scoring. Brodie Kresser was hit by a pitch, Logan Sauve followed with a single to right field, a Sam White walk and a Jace Reinhart fielder’s choice got the wheels turning for WVU and put early pressure on the Towson bullpen, and defense.

Chase Meyer threw two scoreless innings, striking out three, walking two and hitting one batter. Mac Stiffler was the first out of the pen, striking out two ย in his lone inning of work.

Kyle West appeared with a pinch hit at-bat in the bottom half of the second, piecing an RBI double off the left-center wall. Three consecutive walks and a fielders choice gave the Mountaineers a 7-0 lead through the second.

True freshman Tucker DeLisle made his collegiate debut in the fourth inning, with a scoreless inning and striking out one.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the WVU offense continued with an RBI double from Gavin Kelly, who later scored on a fielder’s choice, extending the WVU lead to 9-0.

Redshirt freshman JJ Glasscock appeared in the fifth for a scoreless inning, striking out two, walking one and hitting a batter. Bryson Hoff entered the game in the sixth inning, and was pulled after two batters, entering in Joe Fredericks, whose day was also cut short.

Ben McDougal came up massive out of the bullpen. Entering the game with bases loaded and nobody out, McDougal struck out the first two batters before inducing a line out to right field to end the inning. Luke Lyman appeared in the seventh inning, continuing the rhythm from McDougal by striking out the side.

Spencer Barnett launched an opposite field home run in the bottom half of the seventh inning, giving the Mountaineers an 11-2 lead. Barnett continued his hot day at the plate, concluding the game with a grand slam to put the mercy rule into effect.

WVU (15-1) will head out to Stillwater, Okla. this weekend to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys to open up Big 12 play.
