Former Top WVU Basketball Commit on Visit with Rival
Could a former top WVU basketball commit land with West Virginia’s arch rival up north?
The Pitt staff will host former West Virginia commit and current high-school prospect Braydon Hawthorne for a visit on Tuesday, a source confirmed to WV Sports Now’s partner Pittsburgh Sports Now.
Hawthorne had previously committed to the last West Virginia head coach — Darian DeVries. He decommitted when DeVries left for Indiana. Now, he is fielding a crowded recruitment.
Hawthorne recently took a trip to Kentucky, and will take an official visit to Duke this upcoming weekend, as well, according to reports.
The 6-foot-8, 175-pound wing is one of the top-75 players in the nation, according to 247 Sports. He is from Huntington, West Virginia, and is the No. 1 overall player from West Virginia. If you remember, Pitt reportedly hired former West Virginia’s former Director of Recruiting Jay Kuntz, who was on staff at WVU when they landed Hawthorne initially. However, that hire has not been announced officially by the University yet.

Pitt has also missed the tournament the last two years, a lot of their fans want the coach fired and their financial situation is no better, and arguably worse.

Agree with Asti… Pitt is no great landing spot for him… Unlikely to get playing time at Kentucky or UNC… I wish he would come here, but the coaching turmoil at WVU plus the lack of a record for Hodge at this level may be part of the reason that he hasn’t committed here…
