Late Sunday night, the Associated Press released the names that will appear on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot for the first time. Carlen coached the Mountaineers from 1966-1969 yielding a 25-13-3 record while at the helm before taking the head coaching job at Texas Tech.

Carlen also coached at South Carolina before calling it a career following the 1981 season.

He finished with a career record of 107-69-6 and a .604 win percentage.

In 1969, he led the Mountaineers to a 10-1 record and a Peach Bowl victory over South Carolina. The teams’ only loss that season came on the road at the hand of No.5 Penn State, who shutout West Virginia 20-0.
