WVU Football Recruiting
Major ACC Brand Pursuing WVU Football 2025 WR Commit
Showing what a commitment is thought of these days, another major program is pursuing a WVU football commit. Even though Tariq Mallory has been committed to West Virginia since June, Florida State still sent him an offer.
Mallory revealed his FSU offer Wednesday morning on social media, thanking the Seminoles and head coach Mike Norvell.
While it’s common for schools to still send committed players offers, it’s notable because Mallory hasn’t posted about another program for months before this offer. In fact, Mallory even made a comment public directed at other schools trying to steal him in August.

At that time, Mallory posted, “you got a better chance of winning the lottery than flipping me” on X (formerly Twitter). Has something changed? Since that was before the 2024 season, has West Virginia’s disappointing season caused him to reconsider becoming a Mountaineer? Is the uncertainty surrounding the future of WVU head coach Neal Brown and his staff creating problems in trying to keep their committed players with National Signing Day approaching in December?
WVU Football 2025 Commit Fires Shot at Schools Trying to Flip Him
These are all fair questions, although it’s also possible Mallory is still locked in with WVU despite publicizing his latest offer to jump to the ACC. It even needs said that Florida State is dealing with uncertainty of their own due to an even worse season than West Virginia, granted did win a conference title in 2023.
Mallory, 6-foot-5, 195-pound wide receiver, committed to West Virginia on June 4. In ironic fashion based on Mallory’s most recent statement, he initially committed to Wake Forest in April before eventually flipping to the Mountaineers.
Prior to his commitment, the WVU staff hosted Mallory on campus for an official visit, which ended up completing the flip from Wake Forest.
Mallory has repeatedly mentioned WVU wide receiver coach Bilal Marshall on social media. Marshall has been Mallory’s lead recruiter, leveraging his position as wide receivers coach and his standing as a former player.
Back in January, the New Haven, Conn. native and Cheshire Academy product received an offer from the Mountaineers and then celebrated by talking with Tavon Austin.
“Just got off the phone with MY GOAT TAVON AUSTIN after being offered by WVU,” said Mallory at the time.
WVU was among the first major conference programs to show interest in Mallory, joining Connecticut, Maryland and Massachusetts at the time of the offer. While Rivals has awarded Mallory as a three-star wide receiver, other major recruiting outlets have his position more fluid and list him as just an athlete due to his experience at cornerback.
Mallory is classified as a consensus three-star prospect and universally ranked among the top 10 players in Connecticut and top 200 wide receivers nationally.
