Meet the WVU Basketball Team: High-Ceiling Wing Joson Sanon
WVU basketball brought in some Big East experience this offseason in acquiring junior guard Joson Sanon out of St. John’s.
Sanon enjoyed a hot start to his career, with his first stop being Arizona State as a freshman where he averaged 11.9 points per game in 27 appearances and nine starts. Things slowed down when he transferred to St. John’s as a sophomore, averaging 7.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.
Sanon had a splash performance in the Big East Semifinals, where he scored 15 points on 3-5 shooting from three. After the game, head coach Rick Pitino spoke highly of Sanon.
โI’ve said it all along, Joson’s physically the most talented ball player on the team,โ Pitino said of Sanon. โHe’s only going to grow. He made a big-time play down the stretch defensively and he’s grown as a defensive player, and that’s exciting because he’s so much better defensively, he’s so much better doing other things, but he is a cold-blooded shooter. I got great confidence in him.โ
Sanon has a great build for a wing, standing at 6-foot-5 with lengthy arms. He can score at all three levels, having shot 33.6% from three last year.
Now, with many penciling Sanon as a starter alongside a powerhouse scorer like guard Finley Bizjack and five-star recruit Miles Sadler, he has a chance to right the ship of his collegiate career as Mountaineer.
