National Outlet Rains on WVU Football’s Transfer Parade with Low Portal Rank

Despite the amount of transfers committing to West Virginia, at least one national outlet isn’t sold on the quality of those players. There’s no denying the new WVU football staff has been experiencing success in landing transfers, but what type of players are they adding?

WVU has secured 25 transfer players to combat the loss of 23 from the 2024 roster, but On3 Sports isn’t impressed with the overall class. On3 Sports currently ranks West Virginia near the bottom of the Big 12 in terms of their work in the transfer portal. WVU is at No. 15 and only above Arizona as of Jan. 15.

To put this rank more into perspective nationally, the Mountaineers rank at No. 62 in the country right now. It’s also worth noting a Big 12 school (Texas Tech) sits at the top of their national list.

Obviously, these ranks are simply opinion, and only the opinions of one outlet. However, it is interesting to see such a poor showing for a staff that has been able to win over so many transfers, especially in recent weeks.

While WVU lost notable players like CJ Donaldson, Hudson Clement, Josiah Trotter, ย Tomas Rimac, Traylon Ray and Trey Lathan among others, they did bring in multiple veteran quarterbacks, several defensive backs, a slew of lineman on both sides of the ball, some wide receivers, tight ends and linebackers to try to make up for what’s left and find players that best fit Rich Rodriguez.

Out of WVU’s 25 transfer commits, many are players following Rodriguez from Jacksonville State or others looking to elevate themselves from the FCS or Group of 5 level, which is likely leading to the low rank. But to be fair to Rodriguez’s staff, they have won over some notable Power Four transfers. And WVU did beat out other Power Four programs for players as well.

In all reality, it’s impossible to truly evaluate the new players or how the team gels under a new staff before seeing them at spring practice.
