The 2023 WVU baseball season ended on Sunday afternoon by the hands of a hosting Kentucky team. The Mountaineers tied a program record 40 wins this season, the first since 1994.

West Virginia had a great season overall but ran into a mental wall, losing seven out of their eight last games. WVU traveled to Austin to win the Big 12 outright but were swept by Texas. The Mountaineers did share the Big 12 Regular Season Championship and lost their first two games in the Big 12 Tournament before being selected to the Lexington regional. West Virginia fell to Indiana and Kentucky while defeating Ball State on Saturday.

Sophomore JJ Wetherholt had an incredible season, recording the highest batting average by a Power-5 player since Buster Posey in 2008. Wetherholt had an average of .449 with 16 homeruns and 60 runs batted in. Wetherholt also stole 36 bases during the year.

West Virginia played top baseball this spring under manager Randy Mazey and have hopes to take another step in 2024.
