For another hint that Rich Rodriguez might be looking to bring the fullback position back to WVU football, he sent an offer to one earlier in the week.

When transfer fullback Collin Remenowsky revealed his West Virginia offer, he posted an image of Owen Schmitt. And of course, there’s no Mountaineer, or maybe player in general, more synonymous with the position than Schmitt.

Remenowsky, listed as a 6-foot-1, 257-pound junior, served as Ashland University’s primary fullback in 2025. He played in all 13 games and recorded 52 yards on eight carries and made three catches for 34 yards.

Prior to college, Remenowsky was named a member of the All-Greater Catholic League at Archbishop Moeller High School in Pleasant Plain, Ohio.

Despite Rodriguez’s past history with utilizing fullbacks, West Virginia is far from the only school interested in Remenowsky. JMU, Miami (OH) and Utah State have also sent offers and even Big 12 peers Iowa State and UCF appear heavily interested as well.

West Virginia tight ends coach Michael Nysewander had a few interesting responses to questions about the fullback position after a fall camp practice ahead of the 2025 season in August.

โ€œItโ€™s funny the title fullbackโ€ฆ A lot of our plays are like an old school fullback. We kinda play in the โ€œsnifferโ€ position or the โ€œwingโ€ position or whatever you want to call it. So thereโ€™s a lot of schemes where those guys are doing what youโ€™d call fullback type plays,โ€ said Nysewander when asked if he has any players who could possibly serve as a fullback.

โ€œTheyโ€™re really kinda one in the same position. There are some schemes where weโ€™ll be off the ball more and some schemes weโ€™ll be in line,โ€ he added.
