WVU Women’s Basketball Comes Up Clutch at Kansas State
WVU Women’s Basketball earned a clutch win at Kansas State on Sunday, Jan. 4, winning 60-58 behind a go-ahead layup from Gia Cooke off an offensive rebound.
The Mountaineers (13-2, 3-0 Big 12) pulled ahead 11-7 midway through the first quarter, but Kansas State allowed just one basket over the next seven minutes as they went ahead 22-14 before Sydney Shaw snapped that spell with a three-point shot.
The Mountaineers took their first lead of the second half with a 9-0 run that began with a Shaw triple. She then poked the ball away for a steal, setting up Gia Cooke for the game-tying layup, and two Jordan Harrison free throws put West Virginia in front as they dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 17-10.
Kansas State struck back midway through the fourth quarter, holding the Mountaineers off the board for more than three minutes as they took a 52-51 lead on an 8-0 run.
Facing a 56-56 tie with 34 seconds left, Kierra Wheeler (18 points, 10 rebounds) missed a jumper, but West Virginia secured an offensive rebound to continue the possession. A Cooke floater put the Mountaineers in front, and a Wildcatsโ turnover helped seal the win.
WVU Women’s Basketball will return home to host No. 21 Texas Tech (16-0, 3-0 Big 12) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
