WVU Baseball superstar shortstop JJ Wetherholt exited the field early during the second game of the Mountaineers’ Monday doubleheader with Stetson.

Following the game, MLB insider Kiley McDaniel reported that Wetherholt is day to day as he recovers from a hamstring injury. WV Sports Now also confirmed this report with WVU.

The Mountaineers’ next game is against the Charlotte 49ers at 4 p.m. Friday, and based on that day to day designation, it sounds like there’s a good chance Wetherholt could suit up… but the team could err on the side of caution with his recovery, especially this early in the year.

Wetherholt dealt with a hamstring injury while playing for USA Baseball over the summer: as of right now, it’s unclear whether the current injury is affecting the same leg.

JJ Wetherholt is the likely first overall pick in this year’s MLB Draft, with news outlets and coaches polls around the country fêting him as the preseason Big 12 Player of the Year and a consensus preseason All-American in addition to receiving a spot on the Golden Spikes Award watch list.

The Mountaineers currently sit at 2-2 on the season after splitting their opening series with Stetson.
