West Virginia’s Javon Small Named National Player of the Week

Javon Small has been named one of the Oscar Robertson Trophy National Players of the Week, the U.S. Basketball Writer’s Association announced Tuesday.
The honor comes one day after Small was also named the Big 12 Player of the Week. He has won both awards twice now this season.

Small guided the No. 23 Mountaineers (13-4, 4-2 Big 12) to a win over then-No. 2 Iowa State on Saturday, scoring 27 points with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.
โHeโs just been incredible all year. I think heโs the best guard in the country right now,โย WVU coach Darian DeVries said after the game. โI wouldnโt trade him for anybody.โ
Leading 51-49 with two minutes left, Small scored 12 of the Mountaineersโ final 13 points to seal the win. That included a three-pointer with 42 seconds remaining to go up by eight and the dagger, a dunk with 21 seconds left to go up by 10.
โHeโs playing at as level as high as anybody in the league,โ Iowa State coach TJ Otzelberger said. โHe deserves all the credit.โ
Small was also named an Oscar Robertson Trophy National Player of the Week back on Dec. 1 after leading WVU to wins over Gonzaga and Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis in The Bahamas.
Among the Big 12, Small is first in scoring (19.8), 11th in shooting (43.5%), third in free throws (88.7%), seventh in three-point shooting (36.1%), fourth in assists (5.2), sixth in steals (1.9) and first in minutes played (36.1).
Small and the Mountaineers host Arizona State tonight for a late-night game tipping off inside the WVU Coliseum at 9 p.m.
