WVU Baseball stretched their winning streak to three games on Wednesday, April 15, defeating Penn State 3-1 in Hagerstown, Md.

Paul Schoenfeld put the Mountaineers (25-8) on the board with two outs and two strikes in the first inning, pulling a solo home run to right. Penn State’s Jack Porter returned the favor with a leadoff blast the following inning, but West Virginia managed to reestablish the lead in the third. Brock Wills tripled, coming home on a Gavin Kelly sacrifice fly.

Matt Ineich walked and Schoenfeld doubled to continue the rally, putting two runners in scoring position. Sean Smith’s subsequent single trickled to the pitcher’s mound, slow enough for Ineich to score but without the depth to plate Schoenfeld.

The Mountaineers’ bullpen took over from there, spelling starter David Hagen. Ian Korn fanned three batters in two innings, Reese Bassinger struck out four in three and forced a double play. Penn State’s only real threat came on a Porter double in the sixth — the right fielder finished a triple shy of the cycle — but Weston Smith managed to keep him from scoring.

WVU Baseball will return to action at home against Houston at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 17.
