WVU Basketball F Javan Buchanan NCAA Waiver Denied, Going to ‘Legal Process’

The saga of WVU basketball battling for NCAA waivers continues, as senior forward Javan Buchanan’s waiver was denied, per head coach Ross Hodge.

While the waiver was denied by the NCAA, the case will go to the legal level where he could be granted an injunction or a TRO against the NCAA rules. Hodge said he remains optimistic for a decision in Buchanan’s favor due to players with similar cases being granted eligibility.

You’re paying attention to other cases that are similar in nature to his and, um, you’re, you’re following, you know, trends… It’s been fairly consistent on certain cases if you’re looking at them, Hodge said.

“If it’s feel like they’ve been more lenient if you’re in that true fifth year window where you’re not trying to get the sixth or the seventh… you feel like you like your chances if you’re in that situation, if you’re trying to just get what was given to either previous classes or future classes. I think where it gets a little dicey is if you start trying to get a sixth year, a seventh year You know, regardless of the scenario.”

Buchanan spent the past two seasons with the Broncos after transferring from the NAIA level. Buchanan averaged 12.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game during the 2025-26 season. He appeared in 37 games and was named the Mountain West Sixth Man of the Year. He shot 42.3% from the field and 83.6% from the free throw line. His career free throw percentage of 82.7% ranked third in Boise State history.

Despite still waiting for a decision from the legal process, Hodge said Buchanan has been a “full participant” in all team activities so far this offseason.
