WVU basketball has announced that its upcoming home game against No. 3 Iowa on Jan. 18 has sold out. This marks the first sellout of the season for the No. 21 Mountaineers and the first in the tenure of head coach Darian DeVries.

Excitement has been building around WVU basketball ever since the team returned from its trip to The Bahamas with ranked wins over Gonzaga and Arizona. Over 11,000 people filled the WVU Coliseum for the Mountaineers’ first home game back against Georgetown on Dec. 6. The Mountaineers have averaged nearly 10,500 fans in its six home games since the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament.

WVU has eclipsed 10,000 fans in each of its last three games, including a season-high 11,753 on hand to watch Saturday’s blowout win over Oklahoma State.ย The game against the Cyclones on Jan. 18 is the next time the Mountaineers will play in Morgantown as the team is currently on a brief two-game road swing at Colorado and Houston.

WVU basketball has dominated the series against Iowa State in recent years, winning eight of the last 10 meetings. ISU got the best of the Mountaineers in their last meeting, however, winning 71-64 in Ames on Feb. 24 last season.

Iowa State is 13-1 this season and ranked No. 3 in the country. The Cyclones face Texas Tech and Kansas in the leadup to their trip to Morgantown next week.

For a related story, should WVU offer Darian DeVries an extension this early into his tenure?
