WVU Basketball Officially Starts Preparation For 2022-23 Season

Published

on

Monday marks the first official day of practice for college basketball teams. As West Virginia begins their preparation for the 2022-23 season, let’s take a quick look at the new faces and roles for the Mountaineers.

Returning Players: Kedrian Johnson, Kobe Johnson, Seth Wilson, Jamel King, James Okonkwo

Transfer Portal Additions: Emmitt Matthews Jr. (Washington), Erik Stevenson (South Carolina), Tre Mitchell (Texas), Joe Toussaint (Iowa)

JuCo Additions: Jimmy Bell Jr., Mohamed Wague, Patrick Suemnick

True Freshmen: Josiah Harris, Josiah Davis

This new look that the Mountaineers have this season will give Bob Huggins and his staff a versatile feel. WVU could play small with Keddy Johnson and Toussaint, or play big with Mitchell and Bell. Huggins can get creative with running different sets if he wants to.

This team plays with more toughness and energy than last season’s team but has question marks on the offensive end. Matthews, Stevenson and Mitchell have all averaged in double figures during a season in their collegiate careers. They’re going to need other players to step up big-time and help produce.

West Virginia will open up their season at Nov. 7 against Mount St. Mary’s at the WVU Coliseum starting at 7 p.m. Click here to take a look at the full schedule.
