WVU HC Neal Brown: ‘You Either Prove Them Wrong or Prove Them Right’

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The personality was one of the first things WVU head coach Neal Brown was asked about when he addressed the media to open up fall camp.

When you promote players to bigger roles and then added a bunch of others to a roster that is looking to prove critics wrong, it’s very possible the makeup of the group takes up a new personality, especially with the past leadership no longer around.

It’s now time for Garrett Greene, CJ Donaldson, Aubrey Burks and Sean Martin to blend their voices with newcomers like Devin Carter, Kole Taylor, Beanie Bishop, Anthony Wilson, Tyrin Bradley and others. And so far Brown seems to like what he’s seeing take shape in that respect.

Brown labeled the 2023 Mountaineers as a group with a “youthful energy” to them. The roster is made up of some experienced players and others looking to make the most out of an increased opportunity this season. That could be incumbent players like Greene, who has been battling Nicco Marchiol for the starting quarterback role, or someone like Carter hoping to enhance his NFL draft stock as a number one wide receiver.

Brown even mentioned how he feels the personality of this team fits well with the pressure on him personally and the fact that few believe WVU will be anything but a bottom feeder this year. “Some of the best teams to ever play here were not picked,” said Brown about the media poll predicting West Virginia to finish last in the Big 12.

But Brown also knows talking won’t prove anything to anyone. It’s now time for his team to show what they are truly made of.

“You either prove them wrong…or you prove them right.”
