Powered by a career-high 38 points from star shooting guard JJ Quinerly, WVU Women’s Basketball crushed Utah 75-46 on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Quinerly, whose scoring surge tied the program record, nailed 16 of 21 shots, including four of five from three-point range, coming close to out scoring the Utes single handedly. No other Mountaineer managed double figures, while Utah’s Maye Toure, who led the visitors with 12 points, only hit that benchmark in the final minutes.

The No. 18 Mountaineers (22-6, 12-5 Big 12) put on another defensive clinic, limiting an excellent 21-7 Utah team to a 31.5 shooting percentage and forcing 28 turnovers. Those giveaways turned into 35 points for West Virginia.

The Mountaineers allowed just two made shots in the entire first period, leaping out to a 13-5 lead with the help of an 8-0 run.

Quinerly was at her best during the middle frames, scoring 28 points across the second and third periods, including a run of seven in a row shortly before the half. Utah, similarly, put up their best performance during that 20 minute span, and on a night when the rest of the Mountaineers made just 14 of 41 shots, Quinerly’s heroics helped keep them from squandering their early lead.

Leading 51-36 at the end of the third period, the Mountaineers opened the floodgates in the final frame, dropping 24 points to turn the game into a bona fide blowout with the help of strong bench performances from Destiny Agubuta and Sydney Woodley in limited minutes.

Up next for WVU Women’s Basketball is their regular season finale at Cincinnati starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 1.
