WVU’s Coaching Staff Extends Offers to 3 Talented Recruits on Friday

Friday was a busy day for West Virginia’s coaching staff as they extended offers to 2024 SF Tyler Betsey, 2023 G DeShawn Harris-Smith JUCO G DaVeon Thomas. All three recruits are currently being recruited by other Power-5 programs.

Tyler Betsey:

Betsey (6-foot-7, 175 pounds) is a 2024 small forward from Connecticut. West Virginia’s staff first reached out to Betsey on June 15 when the contact period started for his class.

“Blessed to receive an offer from West Virginia University,” Betsey wrote on Twitter.

Betsey averaged 23 points and six rebounds as a junior at Windsor High School. Next season Betsey will be attending St. Thomas Moore, a prep school in Connecticut.

The 2024 prospect has received a lot of Power-5 attention recently, receiving offers from Brown, Central Connecticut State, Creighton, Fairfield, George Washington, Iona, Iowa, Manhattan, Nebraska, Penn State, Pitt, Rhode Island, Rutgers, Sacred Heart, Seton Hall, St. Bonaventure, St. John’s, Syracuse, TCU, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. 

DeShawn Harris-Smith:

Harris-Smith (6-foot-5, 210 pounds) is a 2023 4-star guard out of Virginia. The rising senior currently plays at Paul IV Catholic. Harris-Smith is one of the many top-150 players WVU has reached out to in the past 10 days.

“Blessed to receive an offer from West Virginia University. Thank you for believing me,” Harris-Smith wrote.

Harris-Smith has picked up offers from Butler, George Mason, Georgetown, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas State, LSU, Penn State, Radford, Rutgers, St. John’s, TCU, Texas Tech, VCU, Villanova, West Virginia and Xavier. Harris-Smith officially visited Penn State on June 27.

DaVeon Thomas:

Thomas (6-foot, 190 pounds) was the first offer on Friday afternoon. The guard is a JUCO product that currently plays at Kilgore College (TX). Thomas averaged 11.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.0 steals in 34 games in his freshman season.

“Blessed to receive an offer from West Virginia University,” Thomas wrote.

Over the past month, Thomas has received offers from Alabama State, Arizona State, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Kansas State, Memphis, Milwaukee, Old Dominion, UAB, West Virginia and Wichita State.
