2024 WVU basketball signee Carmelo Adkins reacted to the Mountaineers’ upset win over Kansas and the improved play during the Big 12 slate. WV Sports Now reached out to Adkins for his thoughts.

“A lot of West Virginia fans gave up on the team this year and for them to knock off Texas and then No. 3 Kansas, it just told me they are some dawgs,” he said.

“My boy Big Pat [Suemnick] has been stepping up big time, he’s one of the reasons for the upsets. They’re playing like a top 25 team in conference play,” Adkins added.

Adkins (6-foot-5) is a guard from Lubbock, Texas, who signed with West Virginia in November. Adkins reclassified from 2023 to 2024 for his postgraduate year at PHHoenix Prep OTE and is a three-star prospect. Adkins committed to West Virginia on Nov. 2, while also understanding the position the current coaching staff is in.

“It sucks knowing that they are in that position right now, but I’m very positive that they’ll be back to coach me next year,” Adkins said. “Obviously it was a risk but I’m a risk taker.”

WVU assistant Jordan McCabe originally offered Adkins in September. Adkins then officially visited West Virginia in October and wasn’t left disappointed.

“What stuck out to me most from the visit was [the] hospitality from the players while I was there. They made me feel like I belong,” Adkins told WV Sports Now. “I love Morgantown a lot, the fans are truly die-hard fans while I was walking with the players multiple students and parents gave their support for this year’s season.”

Adkins is averaging 9.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game for Diamond Doves.
