On Tuesday morning, Best Virginia, WVU’s basketball alumni team, confirmed that Juwan Staten is the fifth member of the team for the TBT tournament in July.

Staten played for Best Virginia in 2019 and 2021.

“He is a coach on the floor,” Best Virginia head coach James Long said. “He competes every play. He makes his teammates better. All of those things are vitally important in trying to win the TBT.”

Staten will join John Flowers, Kevin Jones, Jamel Morris and Jaysean Paige as the confirmed players for the TBT.

Staten played for WVU from 2012-15, helping the team reach a Sweet 16 appearance in 2015. Before college, Staten attended Oak Hill Academy, which is famously known for alumni Carmelo Anthony, Michael Beasley, Kevin Durant, Stephen Jackson, Ty Lawson, Rajon Rondo, Jerry Stackhouse, amongst others. Staten, a Dayton, Ohio native, spent his freshman season at the University of Dayton, before transferring to West Virginia for his last three years of eligibility.

At West Virginia, the 6-foot-1 guard was selected the All-Big 12 First Team in 2014 and 2015. Staten finished his career at WVU with 1,260 points in three seasons. Staten finished seventh in program history with 433 assists in just 94 games.

Following his graduation in 2015, Staten went undrafted in the 2015 NBA draft. During that summer, Staten signed with the Golden State Warriors and played for their D-League team, the Santa Cruz Warriors. Staten was traded to the Delaware 87ers and played a few games before signing with Belifius Mons-Hainaut of the Belgian League.

Since playing in Belgium, Staten has played in Finland, France and Hungary. Staten has been transitioning into a coaching career. Staten served as a graduate assistant under Huggins for West Virginia in 2021. Staten has trained Miles “Deuce” McBride, amongst other Mountaineer greats.

Best Virginia is returning to Charleston, WV, in July to co-host one region of the TBT tournament with Herd That, Marshall’s alumni team. The Charleston region will run from July 24-27. The link for tickets for the 2022 TBT can be found here.
