Best Virginia against Herd That in TBT
Dave Ryan / Best Virginia

The two co-hosts of the West Virginia Regional for the TBT will face off Sunday, as the WVU-Marshall rivalry is relived through Best Virginia and Herd That.

The two teams last met in the 2023 TBT, where Herd That won 74-61.

Best Virginia comes into the matchup having survived a strong comeback attempt by Dubois Dream in the first round, made up of several players from the Mountain East Conference in Division II. After leading by 17 points to start the fourth quarter, Best Virginia went down 69-65 in the Elam Ending with a target score of 72. Best Virginia held on and won thanks to two free throws from guard Toby Okani.

Herd That held off Sikh Warriors in their first round matchup Friday. After trailing 23-21 at the end of the first quarter, Herd That came out on top 84-71.

Best Virginia was led by guard James Reese V, who finished with 21 points and nine rebounds. Herd That had a breakout game from guard Jacorey Williams, who finished with 29 points and 10 rebounds.

Notably, Herd That was without guards Jon Elmore and Taevion Kinsey, as they are both playing for the Sacramento Kings Summer League squad. Former WVU guard Erik Stevenson has been playing for the Miami Heat in Summer League, so he has been unavailable for Best Virginia.

Best Virginia has a number of first-time TBT players. Okani was joined by former teammate center Eduardo Andre Friday night, who played a rotational role while tallying four rebounds and two blocks.

Former teammates guard Keddy Johnson and forward Tre Mitchell started the game against Dubois Dream, representing the final Mountaineer squad coached by Bob Huggins. Johnson finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Mitchell added 13 points and five rebounds.

Sunday’s game is set for 5 p.m. at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center and will air on FS1. The winner of Sunday’s game will play the winner of ย the top-seeded Elite Nation and the Court Street Kings.
