College Basketball Power-5 Coaching Carousel: Rumors About Louisville’s Search Could Impact WVU

As the college basketball coaching carousel continues to spin, reporters and insiders are constantly dropping information about names associated with open jobs. And since WVU will be one of the premiere programs around the country looking for a fresh start with a new coach, what could happen with other schools can impact the Mountaineers.

Late Monday night, Eric Crawford of WDRB News in Louisville offered what he’s been hearing in relation to one of those other programs West Virginia will be completing with while on the hunt for a coach. According to Crawford, one of the longest tenured reporters on the Louisville beat, his sources are telling him coaches like Scott Drew, Dusty May, Josh Schertz and even a coach WVU fans are very familiar with from his days at Pitt and now in the Big 12 at TCU – Jamie Dixon.

Out of those names, May immediately jumps off the page because he’s been widely connected to several open jobs and he’s also someone WVU director of athletics was reportedly interested in last summer while briefly searching following the departure of Bob Huggins.

Dixon, who is coaching at his alma mater, may not even be interested in leaving his current job, is another one who stands out. Dixon doesn’t necessarily stand out in relation to someone WVU might be also interested in, but as a big name coach who could cause chaos to the overall market if he were to jump from TCU to a big name program.

Schertz, who’s becoming a sexy name this year based on his improbable success as Indiana State, is also a name on our board for WVU.

While things are from in stone, it’s safe to say where’s there’s smoke, there could definitely be fire. But at the same time, expect more reports and rumors to keep coming out, especially once the programs involved are officially done playing games.

WV Sports Now has created a list of Power-5 jobs that are opened and could compete with WVU for other coaches. This list will be updated throughout the offseason.

**note: this list incorporates the 2024 conference realignment
