It will be the 192nd meeting of the bitter rivals on the hardwood, with the Mountaineers holding a 103-90 all-time advantage in the series that dates back to 1906. It is the Panthers, however, who have been on top recently, with two straight wins in the Backyard Brawl by an average of 20.5 points.

Pitt beat West Virginia 80-63 in 2023 in the Coliseum and then 86-62 last season in Pittsburgh. Prior to 2023, the Mountaineers had won six straight against their top rival, dating back to the final meeting as Big 12 conference mates in 2012.
This year’s meeting will be the first Backyard Brawl for new WVU head coach Ross Hodge and West Virginia’s entirely new roster of players. Pitt’s Jeff Capel, meanwhile is entering his eighth season with the Panthers and is 2-4 in his six Backyard Brawls.
This year’s game is the second in a four-year extension in the series that was announced early last year. The four games will alternate venues, beginning last season in the Steel City and continuing this year in Morgantown.
