Gambler’s Corner: Week Five

Published

on

This time last season, we were staring a losing record right in the face, questioning whether or not we should even continue on with this series.

Now, after four weeks of the 2018 campaign, we’re sitting at 5-1 and we hope our advice has won you a little wad of cash.

Let’s hop right into our picks for week five.

Week four results:

  • Texas A&M (+27) at Alabama – Win
  • Kansas State (+16.5) at West Virginia – Loss
  • Georgia at Missouri (over 64.5 points) – Win

Hot Picks of Week Five

Oklahoma State (-17) at Kansas

The gig is up, Kansas. The entire country, including ESPN’s Joey Galloway, believed the Jayhawks were well on their way to a respectable season. But even lopsided wins over Central Michigan and Rutgers aren’t enough to convince me that Kansas has the personnel to slow down a frustrated Oklahoma State offense. I expect the Cowboys’ offense to right the ship against Kansas after looking inept against Texas Tech at home last week. The Jayhawks are 1-4 against the spread in the last five games against Oklahoma State and that trend will continue on Saturday.

Texas (-8.5) at Kansas State

The odds makers have yet to realize Texas may in fact be “back.” After losing 29-34 to a clearly inspired Maryland team in the opening game, the Longhorns have gone on to dismantle Southern California and Texas Christian in back-to-back weeks. Meanwhile, Kansas State has looked very un-Kansas State like. The Wildcats have an apparent quarterback controversy, a depleted secondary, and an offense that turns the ball over an average of twice a game.

Oregon at California (over 58)

I’m a big believer in Oregon’s quarterback Justin Herbert and its potent offense. Oregon looks like the Oregon of yesteryear, averaging over 500 yards and 46 points per contest. Cal’s offense isn’t too shabby either, posting 30 points per game. Defensively, the Golden Bears haven’t faced an offense as dangerous as Oregon’s and are somewhat suspect against the run. This could turn into a shoot out rather quickly.

Side bet: The Ducks are only favored by two points on the road this week. If you’re feeling gutsy, take Oregon against the spread and the over to maximize your earnings!
