Garrett Greene to Start at QB for WVU vs. TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas — Quarterback Garrett Greene will return to the starting lineup for WVU as the Mountaineers continue Big 12 play with a road game against TCU on Saturday night.

Greene, a 5-foot-11 junior, started West Virginia’s first three games, but suffered an ankle injury in the Backyard Brawl against Pitt on Sept. 16.

Redshirt freshman Nicco Marchiol replaced Greene against the Panthers, leading WVU to a victory. He also started last Saturday, when the Mountaineers knocked off Texas Tech to start Big 12 play.

WVU head coach Neal Brown said that Greene was available for that game as a backup, but was not 100% and he did not want to play him if he was not fully healthy.

Greene took warmups with the first team at Amon G. Carter on Saturday night and is expected to be the first quarterback in the huddle against the Horned Frogs.

Greene and Marchiol competed for the starting job throughout the spring and summer, with Brown waiting until WVU took the field for the season opener at Penn State to reveal who had won the battle.

On the season, Marchiol has completed 25 of 44 for 213 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for a 103.4 passer rating. Greene is 26 of 47 for 402 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, and has a 155.3 passer rating. In addition, Greene is the super rushing threat, taking off 21 times for 105 yards (5.0 yards per carry) and a touchdown. Marchiol has run 29 times for 78 yards (2.7 yards per carry) and one score.

Greene will be without one of his top targets for the game, as wide receiver Cortez Braham did not make the trip to Texas and has left the team. Braham has accounted for three catches for 17 yards so far.

Devin Carter, Hudson Clement and Presont Fox are expected to start at wide receiver for the second consecutive game.
