West Virginia basketball – tougher than a long weekend at your in-laws. That’s what WVU fans grew accustomed to seeing CBS national college basketball insider Jon Rothstein post after West Virginia wins.

But no matter how many wins Darian DeVries collects, Mountaineer Nation will never see that from Rothstein again.

After WVU’s 75-69 victory over UMass on Friday night, Rothstein, who is known for his college basketball catch phrases, announced he’s retiring his tag line for the Mountaineers.

“Dear Morgantown, The “West Virginia Basketball — Tougher than a long weekend at your in-laws tagline” was made to reflect Bob Huggins and Press Virginia. That era is now over. Tag lines CAN NOT and WILL NEVER be forced. It is TBD if a new one will arise. Sincerely, JR,” posted Rothstein on X (formerly Twitter) following the win.

While Rothstein is right that his tag line doesn’t seem to fit the DeVries era, he did use it throughout the 2023-24 season during West Virginia’s forgettable season under interim Josh Eilert.

WVU fans will now have to wait to find out what he feels fits the DeVries brand of basketball. Maybe we will even find out after the West Virginia’s next game – the Backyard Brawl against Pitt next Friday, Nov. 15.
