Kansas’ HOF HC Bill Self Issues Statement After Heart Procedure

Kansas’ Bill Self was released from the hospital on Saturday after enduring a heart procedure. Self even issued a statement about having two stints inserted and the care at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

“I want to thank all the amazing doctors and nurses at LMH Health for the excellent care I received during my stay there. I feel strong and am excited to be home. Our team has had a productive summer and look forward to our batteries being recharged and prepping for this upcoming season,” said Self in a press release sent to members of the Big 12 media.

This marks the second time in two years Self has had to have a procedure due to a heart issue.

In 2023, he had two stents inserted in an effort to open clogged arteries that caused him to miss that season’s Big 12 Tournament and NCAA Tournament.

Self has won 836 career games, with 609 coming with Kansas, and is the only active head coach in the country with two national championships. Self was hired by Kansas in 2003 after experiencing success at Tulsa and Illinois. Self led Kansas to national titles in 2008 and 2022, as well as 17 Big 12 Regular Season Titles. He was indicted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017.

Self signed an emended lifetime contract to stay with the Jayhawks in November of 2023.
