When it comes to facility upgrades and college athletics, its called an arms race for good reason.

And on Thursday afternoon, athletic director Shane Lyons said it best himself while breaking down what the university has planned to bring much-needed improvements across campus.

“My philosophy has always been if we don’t have a crane on our complex or something under construction then we’re going backwards.”

Lyons has tabbed this massive undertaking as the “Climbing Higher” campaign which includes $100 million upgrades for the football, basketball, wrestling and golf facilities. $90 million will go towards improving and expanding the Puskar Center and the Coliseum Complex. The remaining $10 million will be used to construct and upgrade new facilities for the golf and wrestling program.

“This is a major campaign. We need these improvements for our department and our student athletes as we continue to grow,” Lyons said during Thursday’s press conference. “You look at the success we’ve had in basketball and soccer, and I think some of that correlates to the improvements made with their facilities from a recruiting and coaching retention standpoint.”
