Postgame Dustup Between WVU Basketball and Georgetown ‘Just Emotion’
Things got chippy between former Big East rivals as players had some heated words for one another after WVU basketball beat Georgetown on Friday night.
The players started jawing with one another as “County Roads” was played in the Coliseum, escalating to the point where the lights in the area had to be brought back on and police stepped out onto the floor. The teams were separated without incident.
“That’s just emotion, that’s part of the deal,” Georgetown coach Ed Cooley said.

Tensions ran high throughout the game between the Mountaineers and Hoyas with several technical fouls called. Georgetown’s Malik Mack was given a technical for saying something to WVU’s student section in the first half. Georgetown’s Jayden Epps and WVU’s Javon Small were given double technical fouls for getting into it while going into a timeout in the second half.
“I don’t think it was anything more than that,” Cooley said. “Just a bunch of people talking s***, that’s all.”
“It was a competitive game, both teams were competing hard,” WVU coach Darian DeVrise said. “That’s the way it is.”
Cooley and DeVries shared a handshake after the players were separated, indicating there were no hard feelings. To avoid such incidents in the future, Cooley suggested a change to how postgame interactions are handled.
“I personally think because of how things have changed in college sports, I don’t think you should shake hands after games,” Cooley said. “There’s too much emotion that goes into it…We don’t want to be the NBA, but I like what they do, they give the wave and they keep it moving.”
“A good wave might not be bad,” DeVries added.
