Trevon Wesco- West Virginia’s new offensive weapon

Published

As was reported from DubVNation before the season started to expect to see the TE / FB position utilized into the playbook this season.  After the season opener against Tennessee Trevon Wesco and Jovani Haskins both had good catches.  Logan Thimons had a key block on a 3rd down run to get a Mountaineer first down.

Wesco is the obvious leader in the group and finished the day with two catches for 35 yards, including a long one of 29.  The 29-yard reception is the longest by a TE since 2009 when Tyler Urban had a 33 yarder against Liberty.  Will Johnson who played more of a hybrid position had a 37 yarder in 2010 against Rutgers.  Needless to say, its been a long time coming since we have seen the TE position used in any type of downfield action. Wesco has doubled his career total in catches after one game and has already accounted for more than five times his career total in yards.

The senior from Martinsburg figures to only add to those totals as the season progresses.  He has a connection with Will Grier and as noted from our position preview has earned praise for his hands. In addition to that praise, his 6’4″ and 275 lb frame could be a matchup nightmare for many Linebackers.  If the season opener is any indication on the season, the high octane Mountaineer offense has added another key weapon to its arsenal.  Here’s hoping the TE middle screen is added to the playbook this weekend.
